A Play in a week, drama project
This February half-term Acta Community Theatre, a Bristol based theatre company, offered our young carers the opportunity to plan, produce and perform their own play in a week. Acta provide weekly drama workshops for young carers who are based in central, east and south Bristol. However, over the half-term break Acta invited young carers whose geographical location in the city means that they are not able to attend the weekly drama groups easily.
One said, “It’s great because I didn’t know anyone when I got here but now I’m not afraid to mix with people.” Another commented, “We know that everyone here is caring for someone, so you don’t feel on the outside.”
The support of Acta’s dedicated team, alongside the generous funding from The Henry Smith Charitable Foundation, means that young carers citywide could participate in a theatrical experience that would otherwise be unavailable to them. This project has been really valuable to our young carers and we look forward to future partnership work with Acta.
The Thursday evening weekly youth theatre for young carers aged 11 – 16 yrs is currently looking for new members – contact Acta tel.9532448 / firstname.lastname@example.org for further details. Transport can be provided within South, Central & East Bristol.

Cenzina (Bristol Black Carers Development worker) went to watch the final performance: “ I was extremely impressed. It was evident everyone had worked very hard on the project and their hard work had paid off. It was amazing to see some of the quieter young carers acting and talking so confidently in front of an audience. Definitely 10/10”.
